Achieving success with determination and joy

Curriculum

Our curriculum intent

The Brunswick curriculum aims to:

Develop thoughtful, holistic, curious, children through an enquiry based, child-centred curriculum who have a deep sense of worth and belonging. Children will become flexible thinkers who are equipped to embrace change and shape their future.

Key Drivers

Purposeful

Our children will have the vocabulary, knowledge and skills necessary to explore, develop and achieve.

Aspirational

Our children will explore through varied authentic stimuli and respond in a range of creative ways, making purposeful links to other areas of learning.

Personal

Our children will question and reflect on the curriculum and its impact on their real-life experience.

Universal

Our children will learn how their curriculum learning impacts locally, nationally, and globally and makes a difference to modern life.

We provide children with:

  • a rich, creative curriculum with an emphasis on high standards in reading, writing and maths.
  • high quality teaching experiences, which excite and motivate children in the classroom and beyond.
  • opportunities to learn in the extensive grounds and unique setting of Brighton, the beach and the South Downs.
  • enrichment opportunities where learning and teaching can take place beyond the classroom and involve the wider community such as parents and carers.
  • the opportunity to succeed not only in statutory curricular subjects, but to participate in and engage positively with a range of artistic, musical, sporting and cultural opportunities.

Curriculum Design

Our curriculum is designed with knowledge at its heart to ensure that children develop a strong vocabulary base and an understanding of the world.  We know that a focus on the acquisition of knowledge and the development of vocabulary can powerfully address social disadvantage.

Knowledge and skills in all subjects have been thoughtfully mapped to ensure coverage and appropriate progression from EYFS to Year 6.

Whilst the development of high standards in reading, writing and maths are fundamental to our curriculum, foundation subjects are equally valued and taught progressively and consistently.

Children have regular opportunities to engage in open conversations about race, racism and racial inequality. We are committed to representing black, Asian and ethnic minorities in our curriculum.

The teaching of RSHE, British Values and spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) education is well embedded across the curriculum through both cross-curricular and discrete lessons, a carefully planned series of whole school and class assemblies, and external visits and visitors.

Implementation of our curriculum:

The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that within subjects, recurring themes can be revisited in order for links to be made. Knowledge is positioned in line with national curriculum expectations ensuring full coverage is achieved. Skills and knowledge are sequenced carefully and progressively to make links explicit. This helps our children to know more and remember more.

Long term curriculum maps for each year group map precisely the knowledge children will acquire.
