Autumn Term 1

To spell words with common letter strings and different pronunciations.

Word examples with cross over to the new curriculum.
Bough, cough, enough, plough, though, bought, drought, sought, thought.
ea – read, deaf, Reading and bear.

igh- light, night, right, eight, weight, sigh, high
ear – pear, learn, ear, earth

NB. ‘ough’ - This is one of the trickiest spellings in English and can be used to spell a number of sounds.

Autumn Term 2

To spell unstressed vowels in polysyllabic words.

Spring 1

To explore the spelling patterns of consonants and to formulate rules. OUT – Covered earlier.

Use of the hyphen

NB. The ‘r’ is doubled, if the –fer is still stressed when an ending is added.

The ‘r’ is not doubled if the –fer is no longer stressed.
Hyphens can be used to join a prefix to a root word, especially if the prefix ends in vowel letter and the root word also begins with one.

Spring 2

To explore less common prefixes and suffixes OUT – Covered earlier.
