Support for spelling is a fantastic programme which is available to view online and has some great ideas which support the teaching of spelling in schools.

Autumn Term 1 |
To spell words with common letter strings and different pronunciations.

NB. ‘ough’ - This is one of the trickiest spellings in English and can be used to spell a number of sounds. |

Autumn Term 2 |
To spell unstressed vowels in polysyllabic words. K – in knife, know, knee |

Spring 1 |
To explore the spelling patterns of consonants and to formulate rules. OUT – Covered earlier. |

NB. The ‘r’ is doubled, if the –fer is still stressed when an ending is added. The ‘r’ is not doubled if the –fer is no longer stressed. |

NB: -cial is common after a vowel letter and –tial after a consonant letter, though there are some exceptions. Exceptions: initial, financial, commercial, provincial. |

NB. Rule – if –able is added to a word ending in ‘ce’ or ‘ge’ the ‘e’ must be kept (eg. noticeable and changeable) |
